Sasha Grey, "Visual Artist"

Borrowing from the Times Review of Soderbergh's new film, "the Girlfriend Experience," what has distinguished Sasha Grey's career as a 'porn star' is both "the extremity of what she is willing to do and an unusual degree of intellectual seriousness about doing it." Nicely put, A.O.! Undoubtedly what makes her so fascinating is the meeting of a high-concept approach (e.g. borrowing her name from Oscar Wilde and the Kinsey scale; shopping her pop-psychological thoughts on commodity, brand, and sex all over town...) with down-and-dirty praxis (in this case, extremely candid pornography). Prudishness aside, this is more than just a "porn star with a brain" story -- it seems to me she's aware of one of the more surprising/interesting responses to feminism: the power of plasticity, or the quality of being all things to all men.

Her YouTube channel (youtube.com/misssashagrey) is a particularly ripe frontier of the Sasha Grey experience. Her hyper-consciously produced "Grey on..." videos, like the below in which she gives remarks on her recent porn industry awards, truly seem like they could take any shape in the eye of the beholder.

The completely fascinating and all over the map comments section on these are proof pudding of the infinite number of ways she can provoke: from porn super fans with the "Go Sasha! You rock and please do more bukkake scenes!" to the virulently feminist-against-porn crowd to those who hook right into the David Lynch quality of the 'film.' On the other side of the aisle, as it were, check out the charming Current TV interview she lent last week in which she steps through her 5 favorite films (among them, Catherine Breillat's "Fat Girl" and Godard's "Pierrot le Fou"). Naturally, she calls out what makes each ever so slightly PROVOCATIVE.

In any event, this lil' auteur is 'one to watch.'
