Plight of the Modern Magazine
Great NYT piece from the backlog of New Year's reading about how out of touch and depressing Vogue has become. Fashion magazines are generally a very interesting record of ideas about women (I'm not referring to the articles about "women's issues"--much more is actually communicated through the images and the surrounding language). This article makes the genius observation that Anna Wintour has business savvy but no cleverness or interest in the fact that women's ideas of themselves have changed a lot in the 20+ years she's been editing.
Methinks this Velvet Magazine photoshoot is infinitely more interesting than the ridic 50s-fantasy-rehash in the January Vogue.
